Hummingbird

It is hard to see, but getting a picture of a hummingbird has eluded me for ages. Not great but I'll try for better.

FBI Interview

Last week I was interviewed by 2 spacial agents from the FBI regarding my run-in with the FMS (immigration services) during my last trip to Russia (see July10 post for details). To make a long story short, I was found in violation of my tourist visa because I gave a presentation about tourism development while in Vladimir. Presumably I only should have done that if I had a business visa. In any case I was found guilty, fined 5,000 rubles (160USD) and toldd to leave the country within 72 hours.

So where does the FBI come into this? They found out from a friend who was alerted to this blog and wanted more details. But from my perspective, and I hope yours as well, this was a good thing. I'm very pleased our government is that concerned about how Americans are treated abroad, particularly by regimes like those in Russia, to follow up. They basically wanted to know about my experiences with the FMS and Russian travel in general. It was an interesting and engaging meeting.

Considering that this was my 7th trip to Russia and with the support of the American Home staff the experience was not all that bad in hindsight, but nevertheless was still intimidating. I've come to really appreciate the Russian people and their beautiful country but I wonder where their government and ponderous bureaucracy is going? Considering the hassle and cost to get the visa in the first place these kinds of experiences do not bode well for the development of a thriving and prosperous tourism industry. But then again, do they care? Perhaps not.
